Are you looking to try a new coffee drink? If you are, you might want to try green coffee. But, what exactly is green coffee? How does it differ from regular coffee? How do you drink it? Where can you buy green coffee in the Philippines? In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about green coffee.

What Is Green Coffee?

Simply put, green coffee beans are regular coffee beans that haven’t been roasted and remain totally raw. Their extract is popular as a dietary supplement; however, you can also buy green coffee in whole-bean form use it to make a hot beverage, like roasted coffee. However, take note that green coffee doesn’t taste like the roasted coffee you’re used to – it has a much milder flavor. It is said to taste more like herbal tea than coffee.

Moreover, the chemical profile of green coffee is quite different from that of roasted coffee, though their origins are similar. Green coffee boasts an abundant supply of chlorogenic acids – compounds with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that may provide many health benefits. While roasted coffee products also contain small amounts of chlorogenic acids, most of it is lost during the roasting process.

How Is It Different from Normal Coffee?

The key difference between green and normal coffee is that the beans aren’t roasted. This can mean that the drink not only looks different – with its green tinge – but it affects the taste too, as most of the taste of the beans are brought out during the roasting process. Green coffee is also believed to be higher in caffeine, as it loses none in the roasting process. So, it could be perfect for anyone looking for an extra boost from their coffee drink.

What Does Green Coffee Taste Like?

Green coffee doesn’t taste like the roasted coffee you’re used to – it has a much milder flavor. It is said to taste more like herbal tea than coffee. Green coffee isn’t as strong or rich in flavor and can be a mild, refreshing alternative to your regular coffee. Its consistency is closer to herbal tea, and sometimes, it can taste like a mixture between the two.

How to Drink Green Coffee

You probably know that green tea has antioxidants, but did you know that green coffee does too? Unroasted coffee beans that are still green contain chlorogenic acid and antioxidants that’s been linked to weight loss. If you’re looking to enjoy the benefits of green coffee, here’s how you can make homemade green coffee extract at home.

  1. Buy green coffee beans.
Look for high-quality green coffee beans that are wet-processed – this means that they weren’t dried with the fruit left on which can result in mold growth. If you can, buy beans that were machine-hulled as this removes the husks. You can buy green coffee beans online. Or, you can ask your local coffee roasted to set aside some unroasted beans for you to buy.
  2. Rinse green coffee beans.
Put 1 cup of green coffee beans (170g) into a fine mesh strainer and place it under the sink to rinse the beans. Then, transfer them to a pot on the stove. Note: Don’t rub the beans vigorously as they will lose the papery chaff that contains antioxidants.
  3. Boil green coffee beans.
Add 3 cups of water (710ml) to the pot and bring the water to a boil. Then, pour in spring or filtered water and put the lid on the pot. Turn the burner to high and heat the beans until the water starts to boil.
  4. Simmer green coffee beans.
Simmer the green coffee beans for about 12 minutes over medium heat. Then, take the lid off the pot and turn the burner down to medium. Simmer the beans for 12 minutes and occasionally stir them.
  5. Strain green coffee bean extract.
Turn off the burner. Them, strain the green coffee bean extract into a storage container. The strainer must catch the beans and large flakes of the chaff. Tip: Consider storing the beans to steep again – place them in a sealable bag once they’ve cooled and refrigerate them. Steep them again within 1 week and discard them.
  6. Drink the green coffee extract.
Unlike commercial powders that you have to mix, your green coffee extract is ready to drink immediately. If you don’t like its strong flavor, you can dilute it with a little juice or water.
